Bad Ragaz

Small township Bad Ragaz belongs to Swiss canton St. Gallen and is located in the Swiss Alps rather than in the holiday area of Swiss Heidiland. Round about 5,000 inhabitants live in famous Swiss holiday area of Bad Ragaz.

Bad Ragaz is the touristy centre of the Landeserlasse district and is well attainable via car, airplane or per rail. Besides the fact that this town cares for one’s well-being, there is a huge sports offer for families as well as for single tourists. In winter fun is guaranteed for all skiers, snowboard fans, tobogganists and for those who like mountain hikes. Furthermore, there is the possibility to do a bicycle tour, play golf or mini golf, tennis, squash and much more.

Those who rather like doing a sight-seeing tour, in order to get to know regional distinctions and cultural highlights, can explore Bad Ragaz. For instance there is the St. Leonhard chapel. It features three altars and diverse frescos show Leonhard who has been the patron saint of farmers and of their cattle. The vestibule “tells” the tale of the battle of Ragaz (1446) by dint of pictures and captions.

Another place of interest is the Tamina Canyon. It demonstrates the immense power flowing water can have. Moreover this water has been the curative water which led to the foundation of Bad Ragaz: the curative effect of the thermal spring finally caused the moving in of people who established hotels and pensions as well as business enterprises.

The castle ruin Freudenberg is also a great sight. According to a myth, there had been a banished damsel who should be rescued by a brave youngling. He would have gained her love as well as a hidden treasure. But no one succeeded because the right youngling should have seen the damsel’s spirit. Bad Ragaz has even got more sights and is simply worth being visited.
