The Swiss mountain village Wengen is situated in the south of the canton of Bern in the German speaking part of the country. Wengen is a ski resort, located between Interlaken in the north and themountain Eiger, famous for its north wall, in the south. Placed on a sunny terrace, more than 400 meters above the valley of Lauterbrunnen, Wengen is reachable only by train. The village is totally free of cars. It is said, Wengen is one of the most beautiful mountain villages of Switzerland. The picturesque village, first time recorded in 1268, actually consists of several single hamlets. Wengen has a nice church, which is listed and a historic school building. The dale connection by tracks exists since 1893 only. Due to this connection, Wengen became an interesting tourist destination. Today the resort with its about 1 400 inhabitants provides 5 000 beds for its guests. It attracts tourists from all over the world.
Wengen is a Ski Place to be – don’t miss it
Wengen is a place in unspoiled nature, which despite of that fulfils the high tech demands of a modern ski resort. The Swiss mountain village Wengen is situated 1 274 meters above sea-level. It has a cable car, which rises to the mountain station at the peak of Peak Männlichen, 2230 metres above sea-level. Around Wengen you can find lots of ski-runs for skiers with intermediate skills. A network of cable cars and lifts is provided in the whole ski area. If you are tired of skiing the resort provides good cafés, bars and pubs, where you can have a drink at the end of the day.
Wengen is an attractive holiday resort the whole year through. The cable car is also open in summer. From the mountain station you can go by funicular to Grindelwald. The whole area is good for wandering, biking and hiking. A highlight is the glacier canyon, 35 minutes by foot from the centre of the village Grindelwald. The narrow canyon with its wild water is bordered by steep walls, more than 100 metres high. The walk through the canyon lasts about 45 minutes. Wengen itself provides sports facilities for swimming, mini golf and tennis.
